    About the Labrador Retriever

    By admin | October 5, 2007

    Labrador Retriever

A closely related relative to the Newfoundland, the Labrador Retriever breed began in Newfoundland Canada as a smaller, shorter hair dog. The Lab was referred to as a small Newfoundland, the Labrador traveled with fishermen who took them to England. There they were used as a very skilled sporting dog.

The Labrador Retriever breed was established in 1904 by the the English Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club followed suit. Since that time the Labrador Retriever has moved beyond working and hunting, to becoming one of the most versatile and useful dogs today.

Information about the Labrador Retriever: A medium-sized dog who is around 21 to 24 inches tall, the Labrador Retriever is a strong dog, built to retrieve game. The Labrador is one of a few dogs that have webbed feet, this helps it retrieve waterfowl while swimming. A beaver type tail also assists this, acting much like a beaver’s tail in steering the dog while swimming in the water. The Labrador Retriever is medium in size, strong, athletic, and well balanced. They are friendly, outgoing, and possess an extremely sweet personality.

There are two types of Labrador: The American, which is tall and lanky, and the English, which is more thick and heavy. This sporting breed is very good at hunting and also retrieving. Labrador Retrievers are true companions and very much respected for their loving and mild nature.

The Labrador’s coat is mostly waterproof.  It has 2 coats, a top coat and an under coat.  The top coat has short, dense and straight hairs.  The under coat is water proof and soft and can help to protect it from cooler temperatures.  The color of the coat comes in chocolate, black, and yellow. The accepted colors for the Labrador Retriever are yellow, black, and chocolate (brown).   The black labs should be entirely black.  Yellow labs can be a darkish gold color to a very light cream color.  Chocolate labs can be light brown to a very dark (almost black) brown.   The lab’s coat is graded as “average” in shedding.

The most appealing aspect of a Labrador Retriever is their mild temperament. An easy going nature with a distinctive desire to please make this dog the versatile canine it is today. The perfect family dog, Labrador Retrievers are generally not aggressive and happy to play fetch for hours. Their intelligence make them first choice for many tasks in the workforce, including guide dogs and detection work. Labrador Retrievers are very intelligent, loyal, and dedicated. The Labrador Retriever is reliable, affectionate, and adore human companionship and attention. They are so very exceptional with children and get along very well with other dogs. They may be cautious with strangers and can make good watchdogs. The Lab definitely needs attention. If left alone for for a for a period of time without attention they will become very bored and lonely.
